The shining remake. There is no denying the fact that Kings work is a mixture of ordinary life occurences and (somewhat) supernatural forces. The idea of reincarnation explained in this video is a plausible theory. However I do have my own idea on the matter, and so. here it is. First of all, I think I ought to share my own vision of Kings terrifying tale. To me, it is quite literally a re-writing of some domestic abuse / murder story that is sadly all too common in our society: that of a father who, dreadfully unhappy with the way his professional life has taken a turn for the worse, lashes out in fits of drunken anger at his own family before ultimately succombing to a murderous rage. King adds three things to the mix: the young boys hypersensitivity which sadly enables him to feel and absorb (without understanding of course - what child of his age could) the horrible atmosphere that lingers on in the small family; secondly, the boys ability to convey his unhappiness and at times the total fright he experiences at seeing his father lashing out at him and his mother to whoever is sensitive enough to perceive a childs pain from afar (in this case: the neighbour) thirdly, the neighbour, who acts as the only disruptive element, exterior to the familys tight-knit tragedy. And so the story in its most basic lines could be printed as so: “drunken father and failed writer attempts to kill own family; neighbour intervenes and gets killed; father dies, cause of death unknown.” A classic two-liner in any newspaper. Tragedies of the sort happen all too frequently. And yet: the genius of Stephen King develops this common story into something quite extraordinary: Shining is, first and foremost, a study in distance perceived by children. Strange, right! Notice how the film starts by showing the familys little apartment. It is a normal apartment, a two-bedroom apartment, with a kitchen, a bathroom, and a living room / dining area. If any if you have any recollection of what your house or apartment looked and felt like when you were young children, you will understand that everything seemed far bigger than what that house or apartment actually is (especially at night: I remember that staircase separating my bedroom from my parents to be 2 miles long. And so: King invites us to look at this banal tragedy waiting to unfold through the eyes of a child. Everything is big. The kitchen is huge; the hallway is immense; the park outside the house is enormous. This further conveys a sense of utter loneliness and, some would say, desperation felt by the child, all helpless that he is at changing the situation for the better. Now for the “Shining” bit: going back to “real life” settings, the familys next door neighbour may very well have heard the family arguing, but most importantly that neighbour (who may have experienced himself sad or tragic events inside his own family as a child. is sensitive enough to very briefly and occasionally perceive the familys pain through the eyes and general demeanour of that child (remember how they both manage to communicate without speaking. And so: Kings genius reaches a point in the story where the real and unreal amalgamate to become something quite bizarre. When the neighbour (who has probably endured the childs pain far too long) decides to step in, distance again is seen through the eyes and the imgination of a child: the neighbour flies all the way from Florida to get to their house (whereas in real life, that neighbour may have lived across the street. Fast-forwarding a little here (as I wouldnt want to talk too much about the intrictate details of the story/movie) I think that the final black & white image is more of a symbolic image rather than anything else: an image simply depicting happier days in Jack Torrences life. Notice the date especially: 4th July 1921. We all know 4th July celebrations to be a happy, nationwide event. And 1921? A look at some wiki page reveals that “on 2 July 1921, U.S. President Warren Harding signs a joint congressional resolution declaring an end to America's state of war with Germany, Austria and Hungary” - in effect, ending a barbaric conflict of catastrophic proportions. But a conflict which, unknowingly to all at the time, would lead to an even greater catastrophe some 20 years later. A metaphore, perhaps, where (in Kings view) happier times lull us into a false sense of hope and gratification. I know, a little far-fetched perhaps. Only to say that both dates described above have too much of a historic weight to not be taken with serious consideration. And that closes my statement 😀.
